GROWING BY LEAPS AND BOUNDSAs reported via e-mail transmission by Treasury Dept. The Automated Export System (AES), the joint venture between U.S. Customs Service and Census, continues to experience accelerated growth. Due to its phased-in development AES was not fully functional for shipments moving in all modes of transportation until July 1, 1997. AES-PASS, the replacement for the Census Bureau's AERP was not rolled out until November 1997. From July 1997 through April 1998, AES participation has grown 300% to 90 companies, and the number of shipments (SED equivalents) processed through AES has jumped 400%! The number of shipment lines doubled from March 1998 to April 1998, from 24,000 entry line to 48,000 lines. Air and overland shipments are growing the fastest, up 57.4% and 46.3%, respectively in April from March figures. Almost 5500 exporters' filings are currently reported to AES, and the numbers are growing to include a number of the very largest Fortune 500 companies, like Mattel, Ford, GM, Xerox, John Deere, Caterpillar and the like. As of May 6th, seventeen (17) companies have been approved for AES-PASS. Of the nearly 15,000 shipments reported for the Month of April, almost 4,400 were for AES-PASS. The AES Customs-Census marketing efforts, which are focused on one-on-one meeting with the largest paper filers as well as AERP filers, are starting to pay off. With most large companies phasing AES in, it has grown from 1% of paper filing in July 1997 to over 3.5% of paper SEDs by May 1, 1998. At least 20% of all paper filing will be converted to AES by October 1998. Nearly half of the AERP filers will be transmitting by year-end 1998. Over 60% of non-Canadian exports are expected to be reported to AES by December 1999.
