'Network & Work Station tune-up and performance tips.'
Melco News - Volume 8 Issue 1 March 1998
Increasing Network Performance By Erwin Melzer The reliability & manner in which a network operates is dependent on many factors. Some of these include:
The workhorse during the 80’s and early 90’s was Novell from Provo, Utah. Since the mid 90’s Microsoft’s NT from Seattle, Washington has been gaining wide popularity with the ever increasing dominance of their WIN95 and NT operating systems. When properly setup and maintained, a network can provide years of uninterrupted and efficient processing for your business. Server & HDD It is logical to assume that if you have a faster processor, say a 200Hhz instead of a 150Mhz processor, you should enjoy a 25% boost in performance. Likewise if you increase the amount of RAM or memory from 16MB to 32MB or higher, you should also enjoy an additional boost in performance because the server will not have to Read & Write data from the Disk Drive as often. Cabling With the advent of faster processors and memory hugging applications, cabling has become a crucial factor in the operation of an efficient network. Since data flows through the cabling from work stations and to your Server and back, it is vitally important that this often neglected aspect of the network, be carefully scrutinized. Optimally, there should be no repeaters or other means of extending the cable length through multiple hubs from the server to the station. If you presently have 10 megabit cable and have strenuous network traffic, we strongly suggest that you explore a 10BaseT, 100 megabit option. Nothing gives more bang for the buck! Just imagine the difference between driving on a two lane highway as opposed to a six lane highway in heavy traffic. Guess which one has the smoother traffic flow… |
